Obtain real-time airspace authorization to operate your drone in controlled airspace through the FAA's Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) service. This service supports both recreational and Part 107 operations, including day and night flights.

  • Verify the presence of controlled, restricted, or prohibited airspace at your intended flight location.
  • Request authorization to fly within controlled airspace via LAANC.
  • Access current weather conditions for your drone flight.

How does LAANC work?

LAANC streamlines the application and approval process for controlled airspace authorizations. Requests undergo scrutiny across various airspace data sources in the FAA UAS Data Exchange, including UAS Facility Maps, Special Use Airspace data, Airports and Airspace Classes, Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), and Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs). Upon approval, pilots can promptly receive their authorization.

Unless explicitly stated in an authorization, drone pilots are not required to notify the tower before flying.

How Do I Use LAANC?

LAANC is accessible to recreational and Part 107 pilots. Drone operators may utilize LAANC in two main ways:

  • Obtain nearly real-time automatic authorization for drone operations under 400 feet in controlled airspace around airports (available for both Part 107 Pilots and Recreational Flyers). The automatic authorizations might be capped below 400 feet to maintain a safe distance between drones and manned aircraft.
  • Submit a "further coordination request" if flight above the prescribed altitude ceiling on a UAS Facility Map is needed, up to 400 feet. Applications can be filed up to 90 days before a flight, and approval is manually coordinated through the FAA (available exclusively for Part 107 pilots).

Where is LAANC Available?

LAANC services are provided at over 700 airports. To operate a drone within controlled airspace near an airport not covered by LAANC, you must apply for authorization via FAA Drone Zone.

Note: If an airport is outside controlled airspace, FAA authorization is not required for drone operations nearby. However, all federal and local regulations applicable to your drone operation must still be followed.

Prior to commencing any drone operation, always check NOTAMs, weather conditions, and any special events scheduled. A LAANC authorization does not permit operations in areas where drone flights are restricted due to:

Temporary Flight Restrictions
NOTAMs
Events at specific stadiums
Weather conditions hindering operations in Class E Surface airspace.

The information provided in this application is based on real-time data and available anticipated airspace statuses along with airport-specific maps. This information is subject to change; therefore, planning tools should be reviewed before every flight to accommodate any alterations that might affect your drone operation.
